Derek J. Howell is happily married to his wife, Jenna. Derek and Jenna are blessed to have four children, Hudson, James, Josiah, and Ridgely.
Derek is an attorney and retired decorated police officer. He served over 20 years with the Maryland State Police and Montgomery County Police departments, including serving in Cecil County when he was a state trooper.
Derek is a Constitutional Conservative Republican. He has traveled around the country teaching the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and American history. Derek also taught at a Maryland university, college, and a seminary. As a lawyer, he has litigated cases throughout Maryland, fighting for people’s constitutional rights and liberties. He is an avid hunter and fisherman, and member of the NRA. Derek and his family are active in their church, and he strongly believes in Faith, Family, & Freedom.
Derek has been active in Cecil County government. He served on the Cecil County Charter Review Committee, and he presently serves on the Cecil County Republican Central Committee. Derek is a proven leader in public service as well as the private sector, and now he wants to be your voice in Annapolis.
Derek obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees, with honors, from the Johns Hopkins University; his Juris Doctor (J.D.), cum laude, from the University of Baltimore School of Law; and he holds two certificates from Harvard University.

Derek is a Statesman - Not a Politician
Too many politicians get elected, go to Annapolis, and want to pass more "laws." They can't wait to enact more legislation that takes your money and limits your liberty.
G. K. Chesterton wrote, “[w]e are perpetually being told in the papers that what is wanted is a strong man who will do things. What is wanted is a strong man who will undo things; and that will be a real test of strength.”
Instead of bringing more burdens on the citizens of Maryland, Derek will go to Annapolis and fight to UNDO problems plaguing us - such as crazy vehicle registration fees, nonsensical spending, and biased legislation.

Derek Wants to Lower the Cost of Energy
The cost of electric bills has skyrocketed. Cecil Countians are paying electric rates which rival car or mortgage payments.
These high rates are due to the failed energy mandates adopted by politicians in Annapolis that make it impossible for Maryland to generate the power we need. In 2024, Annapolis got rid of your ability to choose your power source by ending deregulation. Further, politicians' failed so called clean energy caused the closure of some Maryland power plants - including completely demolishing one.
As your Delegate, Derek will fight to repeal these disastrous mandates, promote the development of natural gas infrastructure, and prioritize practical solutions like nuclear power over other sources that have proven inadequate to meet Maryland's needs.
Protect & Preserve Cecil County
As a retired police officer, Derek supports our men and women who protect us. Police officers put their lives on the line to make sure we are safe and well. We need to ensure that our fire fighters, EMS, and police are taken care of and have what they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.
Cecil County is rich with its farmland, natural resources, landscapes, and waterways. Derek wants to protect our farmers, fishermen, and hunters, and ensure that Annapolis doesn't bully Cecil Countians with progressive land seizures.
Cutting Wasteful, Destructive Spending - Accountability and Fiscal Responsibility
Our families have to live within our means and keep our family budgets. Maryland must cut out its spending addiction. Further, there needs to be accountability with its spending.
Annapolis never met a problem that it thought couldn't be solved by spending billions of dollars. As your Delegate, Derek will fight to force Annapolis to live within its means and address the root causes of the state's issues, instead of voting to apply a billion-dollar band-aid.
